Officials urge residents to monitor placement, watering, and lighting to prevent serious holiday fires.

As the holiday season reaches its peak, the Woodstock Fire Department has issued vital safety guidelines for residents setting up Christmas trees, warning that nearly one in three tree fires stems from electrical issues.
When selecting a live tree, officials advise picking one with fresh, green needles that do not fall off easily. Before placing the tree in a stand, residents should cut two inches off the trunk to aid water absorption. Crucially, the department warns that trees must be kept at least three feet away from heat sources—including fireplaces, radiators, candles, and heat vents—while ensuring that no exits are blocked within the home.
Daily watering is essential to prevent trees from drying out and becoming immediate fire hazards. Regarding lighting, the department stresses using only safety-approved lights and strictly following manufacturer limits for connecting strands. Residents are urged to replace any damaged strings or loose bulbs and to always turn off tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. Lit candles should never be used on or near the tree.
According to department data, heat sources placed too close to trees account for one in five tree fires. To mitigate risks after the holidays, officials recommend prompt disposal of trees, noting that dry wood catches fire easily. Residents are encouraged to check local options for recycling and to bring outdoor lights inside to prevent weather damage.
