Twelve Cherokee County School District seniors will close out their high school athletic careers with one of the county's most meaningful honors this week, as the Cherokee County Sports Hall of Fame holds its annual senior recognition ceremony Friday.
The organization, an official CCSD partner, selects the most outstanding male and female senior athlete from each of the district's six traditional high schools every spring. Nominees are put forward by school administrators based on the full body of each student's athletic contributions across their high school years, making the recognition a peer-vetted distinction rather than a single-season award.
From Cherokee High School, lacrosse standout Carlee Platko and golfer Blake Spivey were selected. Creekview High School's honorees are Jesse Roland, recognized for fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, and Malachi Burnett, who competed in cross-country and track. Etowah High School is represented by track and field athlete Ewomazino Edet and baseball player Carson Moore.
River Ridge High School's Ava Hoynowski, a swimmer, and Miles Lesley, who competed in wrestling and football, earned the recognition for their school. Sequoyah High School honorees are Rain McRae, who competed in flag football and track and field, and Will Rajecki, a standout in football and track. Woodstock High School is represented by Nina Carcone, who competed in softball and track, and Tyler Barbera, who excelled in football and track.
The breadth of sports represented, from flag football and lacrosse to swimming and slow-pitch softball, reflects the range of athletic programs across a district that has grown significantly over the past two decades. That the Hall of Fame selects two honorees per school, one male and one female, also signals a deliberate commitment to recognizing athletic excellence across the full spectrum of CCSD competition.
Friday's ceremony carries additional weight this year, as it will also include the formal induction of two notable alumni into the Hall of Fame itself, a distinct honor reserved for individuals who have distinguished themselves over many years in Cherokee County athletics. Jayson Foster, a Cherokee High School graduate, will be inducted for excellence in football. Chris Kirk, an Etowah High School graduate, will be recognized for excellence in golf. Kirk is a PGA Tour professional with multiple wins on tour, making him among the most accomplished athletes Cherokee County has produced.
Rounding out the evening, the 2014 Sequoyah High School State Championship Volleyball Team will receive special recognition, a milestone that remains a source of pride for the Sequoyah community more than a decade later.
For the 12 seniors being honored, the timing carries its own significance. The ceremony falls just weeks before graduation, offering a moment to mark not just what these athletes accomplished on the field, track, or in the pool, but what their years of commitment meant to their schools and to the broader county athletic community. The Hall of Fame has long served as the connective tissue between Cherokee County's current student-athletes and the generations of competitors who came before them, and Friday's ceremony is a reminder of why that connection matters.
