Woodstock Community News| Woodstock, GA

With December marking the peak month for home candle fires, the Woodstock Fire Department is urging residents to exercise increased caution when using open flames for holiday traditions and religious services.

According to department data, three out of five home candle fires begin because the flame is placed too close to combustible materials. Officials advise keeping lit candles away from curtains, blinds, and windows, and ensuring they are placed in sturdy, tip-resistant holders. For candles that must remain lit for extended periods, the department suggests placing them inside a glass container situated in a sink, metal tray, or water-filled basin for added protection.

For religious services and family gatherings, the department warns against passing handheld lit candles from person to person. Instead, unlit candles should be dipped into the flame. Officials recommend using battery-operated candles for young children and emphasize that any lit candles on tables, altars, or shrines require continuous adult supervision.

Beyond specific candle handling, the department stresses general fire safety measures for Woodstock homes. Residents should store matches and lighters out of children's reach and ensure smoke alarms are installed on every level and inside sleeping areas. The department advises testing alarms monthly, replacing units every 10 years, and practicing a home fire escape plan that includes two exit routes from every room.
