The Cherokee County School District launched a new athletic tradition this month with its first annual indoor rowing competition. Held at Mill Creek Middle School, the inaugural CCSD Erg Sprints saw Teasley Middle School claim the title of school champions among 115 student competitors.
The event offered middle school students the chance to compete for both individual and team medals on indoor rowing machines, known as ergs. Following this district-level event, the top individual winners have qualified to advance to a competition at Georgia Tech next month.
This competition is the latest development in a physical education program introduced to the district in 2023. The curriculum was established through a nationally competitive Erg Ed Grant from the George Pocock Foundation, which aims to bring indoor rowing to schools.
Mill Creek Middle School PE teacher Donna Ross coordinated the event alongside Ann Carey of the Allatoona Rowing Association. The association has partnered with the school district to facilitate the grant-funded program and support student rowers.
