Cherokee County School District Superintendent Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis addressed nearly 400 local leaders on Jan. 21, reporting that the school system has risen to become the eighth highest-achieving district in Georgia while maintaining fiscal discipline.
Speaking at the Council for Quality Growth’s "State of the County" luncheon, Dr. Davis presented data showing the district’s improvement from the 21st to the 8th highest-achieving district out of 180 in the state. She highlighted historically high College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) results and emphasized that the administration focuses on possibilities rather than limitations.
Dr. Davis also addressed the district's financial strategy, noting a recent legislative request to self-impose a cap on property tax evaluations. She connected these fiscal decisions to the broader success of the local economy, telling attendees that the "health of this community is directly dependent on the health and success of our school system."
The event, co-hosted by the Cherokee County Government and the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce, included updates from Commission Chair Harry Johnston and Economic Development President Heath Tippens. Dr. Davis recognized several staff members and students during the program, including Etowah High School JROTC instructor Ciarra Malto, Creekview High School student delegate Josh DeLima, and Hasty Elementary Fine Arts Academy Teacher of the Year Dr. Lisa Spence.
