Cherokee High Senior Ian Zeller Lands $10,000 National Merit Scholarship from Emerson Electric

Cherokee High School senior Ian Zeller has earned a corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship from Emerson Electric Co., the Cherokee County School District announced. Zeller, a member of the Class of 2026, will receive $2,500 per year, renewable for all four years of his undergraduate education, a total potential award of $10,000.
This fall, Zeller plans to enroll at the University of Alabama to study aerospace engineering. His scholarship is sponsored by Emerson, a global technology and software company that awards the honor to outstanding children of its employees who have also achieved National Merit Finalist status, a distinction earned by fewer than 1% of all U.S. high school seniors nationwide.
To reach that level, Zeller first had to outperform more than 1.5 million students who enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year by taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Of that massive field, only a small fraction advance to Finalist standing, the prerequisite for corporate-sponsored awards like Emerson's. That Zeller not only reached Finalist status but secured a four-year scholarship speaks to the depth of his academic preparation.
His record at Cherokee High bears that out. Zeller has earned an academic letter, the AP Scholar with Distinction designation, awarded to students who score 3 or higher on five or more AP exams, with an average score of at least 3.5, and a UGA Certificate of Merit, which recognizes top academic performers across Georgia. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
What makes Zeller's profile stand out, though, is how much he has invested in the community alongside his coursework. He competes on the mountain biking team and math team, and he volunteers with the Boling Trail cleaning club and the environmental action club, organizations that reflect a genuine commitment to Cherokee County's outdoor spaces and natural environment. His NHS service commitments round out a portrait of a student who has given back as consistently as he has achieved.
For Cherokee County families, Zeller's scholarship is a reminder of what's possible when academic rigor meets community engagement, and a testament to the caliber of students coming out of Cherokee High School.
