A man wanted on a felony weapons warrant barricaded himself inside his Woodstock business Thursday morning, triggering a multi-agency standoff along Highway 92 that stretched more than 12 hours before authorities took him into custody without injury.
The Woodstock Police Department identified the suspect as Michael Warren Johnson, who was wanted on a felony possession of a firearm warrant issued by Cherokee County Magistrate Court. The situation began around 1 a.m. Thursday when Holly Springs Police Department contacted Woodstock officers to report Johnson had been involved in a domestic dispute in their jurisdiction and was believed to be at his place of business at 9504 Hwy. 92 in Woodstock.
When Woodstock officers arrived, they spotted someone moving inside the lobby matching Johnson's description, but he refused to come out. The standoff escalated shortly after 9:15 a.m. when police received a call that Johnson was threatening to harm himself and law enforcement officers.
With negotiations ongoing and the threat unresolved, Woodstock Police obtained a search warrant for the business just before 1 p.m. At 1:52 p.m., the Cherokee County Multi-Agency SWAT Team made entry and took Johnson into custody. All lanes of Highway 92 reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
The response drew agencies from across Cherokee County, including the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Georgia State Patrol, Cherokee Marshals Office, Holly Springs Police Department, Woodstock Fire Department, and Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services.
Woodstock Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community.
