The Cherokee County School District has named Emma Morris of River Ridge High School and Elijah Foote of Cherokee High School its April Athletes of the Month, a pair of spring standouts whose recognition spans two of the county's most competitive athletic programs.
Morris earned the Female Athlete of the Month honor competing in girls lacrosse for the River Ridge Knights under coach Cecil Phillips. Lacrosse has been one of the faster-growing sports in Cherokee County over the past decade, as suburban growth has brought with it a wave of families for whom the sport is a longtime tradition. For a Knights player to earn district-wide recognition in April, the heart of the spring lacrosse season, speaks to the program's rising profile.
Foote took home the Male Athlete of the Month award representing Cherokee High School's track and field program, coached by Jamie Evans. Cherokee High, one of the oldest and largest schools in the district, has long been a force in Warriors track and field, and Foote's selection reflects the depth of spring talent the program continues to produce each year.
Both honorees were presented with a certificate and apparel sponsored by BSN Sports, a national sports equipment and apparel company that partners with school districts across the country to support student-athlete recognition programs. Photos of each presentation show the athletes flanked by their coaches, Morris in Knights blue and gold, Foote against the backdrop of Cherokee's iconic red-and-white Warriors logo.
CCSD presents Female and Male Athlete of the Month awards throughout the school year, drawing nominees from all eight of the district's high schools. The program is deliberately broad in scope, giving athletes across dozens of sports, not just football or basketball, a moment of county-wide recognition. In a district that serves tens of thousands of students and fields competitive programs from cross country to swimming to lacrosse, that breadth matters. Morris and Foote are the latest reminder that spring sports in Cherokee County are very much worth watching.
