The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning to residents regarding a new telephone scam where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement and demand immediate bond payments via mobile apps to release incarcerated family members.
According to the Sheriff's Office, multiple reports have surfaced involving scammers contacting the families of individuals who were recently arrested. The callers claim to represent the agency and state that they can accept bond payments over the phone or through digital platforms such as Apple Pay or Chime.
Officials emphasized that these claims are false. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office never calls residents to solicit money, does not ask for payment over the telephone, and does not accept payments through mobile applications.
Residents who receive calls of this nature should hang up immediately. Authorities advise against sharing personal information or sending money to anyone making these demands.
