Cherokee County Sheriff's Office Spotlights Children's Haven, Putting a Local Lifeline in the Public Eye

The nonprofit serving abused and neglected children in Cherokee County appeared in a post on the sheriff's office social media

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office turned its Facebook page into a small but meaningful spotlight in early April, sharing photos from The Children's Haven and drawing fresh public attention to one of Woodstock's most quietly essential organizations.

For many Cherokee County residents, The Children's Haven operates largely out of sight — by design. The Woodstock-based nonprofit serves as the county's child advocacy center, a place where children who have experienced abuse or neglect can come once and be heard fully, rather than being passed from officer to caseworker to prosecutor, repeating their stories at every stop. Trained forensic interviewers gather information in a single, child-friendly setting while law enforcement, the Department of Family and Children Services, and prosecutors observe and coordinate behind the scenes. Medical evaluations and therapeutic services are available under the same roof. Every service is provided free of charge to child victims and their non-offending family members.

That model — bringing the system to the child instead of the other way around — is now widely recognized as best practice in child abuse response. It reduces the secondary trauma that investigations can inflict on young victims and helps preserve the integrity of criminal cases by ensuring children aren't subjected to repeated, potentially inconsistent questioning across multiple agencies.

The Sheriff's Office is not a passive partner in that work. Investigators from the agency routinely collaborate with Children's Haven staff from the earliest stages of abuse and neglect cases, making the relationship less a formal agreement than an operational reality built case by case over many years. Sharing the center's photos on a platform with thousands of local followers is a small gesture, but in a county where awareness of available resources can make a critical difference for families in crisis, it carries weight.

The Children's Haven depends on community support to sustain services that receive no direct charge to the families who need them most. Residents interested in donating, volunteering, or learning about upcoming fundraising events can visit the organization directly or follow its social media channels for current opportunities.
