Eleven research projects by Cherokee County School District (CCSD) students have qualified for the Regional Social Studies Fair following the district-level competition. The school district announced the winners on December 10, recognizing students in grades 5-12 who completed individual or team research projects.
The annual program encourages students to explore specific areas of social studies and present their findings to judges. This year, competitors received preparation assistance from the Creekview High School Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society. Student members of the society, sponsored by teacher Morgan Hudson, volunteered to coach the younger students on interview protocols before they faced the official judges.
Several Woodstock-area students are among those advancing. Woodstock Middle School saw four history and economics projects qualify, including work by Avy Arun, Eisley Fosburgh, Josie Peck, and Greta Vasarella. From Cherokee High School, the team of Madeline Flournoy, Evelyn Frady, and Myles Lavendar secured a spot with their history project titled "Mobilizing Memory: The Role of Historical Narratives in World War II Propaganda."
Elementary schools were also well represented, with winners from Bascomb Elementary, Mountain Road Elementary, and Hasty Elementary Fine Arts Academy. Topics ranged from Ancient Egyptian beliefs and the sinking of the Titanic to the psychological effects of beauty standards. The district event was coordinated by the Academics & Accountability division and sponsored by the Cherokee County Educational Foundation. The top-scoring projects will compete at the regional fair this winter.
